According to the state-run Erta news agency, Ethiopia's government has temporarily banned its citizens from travelling abroad to look for work.
It has also provisionally barred employment agencies from facilitating travel abroad.
In Erta's report
, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was quoted as saying countless Ethiopians had lost their lives or "undergone untold physical and psychological traumas due to illegal human trafficking".
The government had taken various measures, including setting up a national council and a taskforce, to protect its citizens but they had not been able to "address the problem effectively".
The travel ban will remain in place until a "lasting solution" is found.
