Renamo spokesman Fernando Mazanga told the Reuters news agency that the attack was an attempt to assassinate Mr Dhlakama but he managed to escape.
"Peace is over in the country... The responsibility lies with the Frelimo government because they didn't want to listen to Renamo's grievances," he said.
About a million people were killed in the brutal civil war which lasted from 1975 to 1992 and the country's economy has been booming ever since.
There are fears the country will slip back into chaos.
