Boko Haram leader "mortally wounded"

The Nigerian Army says Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, may have been killed during a shoot-out.

Shekau was injured on June 30 in a clash at Sambisa Forest in north-eastern Nigeria, Col Sagir Musa, a spokesman for the military task force fighting the Islamists, has claimed, citing intelligence reports.

"Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide - a border community in Cameroon for treatment... It is greatly believed that Shekau might have died between 25 July to 3 August 2013," Musa said.

The U.S. had put a bounty of $7 million on Shekau's head.

Boko Haram has waged an insurgency in Nigeria since 2009.
